Parish/Townland
The townland is the smallest territorial division in county Clare. For many of our older citizens, the townland is the principal area of their identity. As a consequence, their knowledge is considerable and often within one townland, our cuairteoirí can unearth a wealth of oral tradition from local features, to historic sites and vernacular buildings with associated lore to the memories of great characters and stories. Inevitably, the parish can also provide the setting for vast amounts of local oral tradition and over time has increased in importance.
